Le Tomahawk
Le BGM-109 Tomahawk est un missile de croisière nucléaire ou conventionnel de conception américaine.
Entré en service en fin 1982, il existe également une version mer-terre ainsi que deux versions air-mer. Ils sont équipés d'un système de guidage inertiel et/ou d'un système GPS, ainsi que d'une tête chercheuse à infrarouge.
Un système nommé TAINS ((en) Tercom Aided Inertial Navigation System) guide les missiles Tomahawk tirés sur des cibles terrestres à une vitesse subsonique (800 km/h) à une altitude variant entre 20 et 100 mètres (pour éviter la détection radar) jusqu'à 2500 km de son point de tir.
Le Tomahawk est notamment construit à l'usine Raytheon de Tucson.
Ils ont été utilisés le 26 mars 2003 lors de l'opération libération de l'Irak pour pilonner le quartier général de Saddam Hussein. Ils ont également été utilisés lors de la guerre d'Afghanistan de 2001.
Ce missile met en œuvre le concept d'armée de l'espace où le satellite permet de relayer des informations aux missiles munis d'un GPS comme le Tomahawk pour une frappe assez précise (de l'ordre de quelques mètres).
Le missile peut être lancé d'un bombardier, d'un bâtiment de surface, d'un sous-marin nucléaire d'attaque (SNA), d'un sous-marin nucléaire lanceur d'engins (SNLE) ou d'un sous-marin nucléaire lanceur de missiles de croisière (SSGN).

Storm Shadow
Storm Shadow is a "fire and forget" weapon. Its strength is in that it can be launched by a bomber from any location up to up to 155 miles (250km) from the actual target.
Technicians on the ground programme the missile with the target co-ordinates and locations of air defences in preparation for a sortie.
When the pilot nears the target, but is still a substantial distance away, the missile is released.
As it detaches from the bomber, its wings fold out and it enters a pre-programmed low and fast terrain-hugging attack altitude to cut under radar and air defences.
Storm Shadow navigates in two ways:
* Constantly updating Global positioning system (GPS) data of its real location * Digital terrain profile matching to what it can see on the ground
As it enters its final approach, Storm Shadow jettisons its nose cone to reveal a high-resolution infra-red camera.
The target recognition hardware then compares what is coming up on the ground with the stored image of the target.
In theory, the missile constantly adjusts its course and angle of attack so that it hits the target as accurately as possible, reducing collateral damage and unintended deaths.
The first stage of the warhead is an initial penetration charge which aims to break into the interior of a target, such as a bunker.
Only following penetration does the second larger charge, delayed by a fuse, detonate. Storm Shadow, manufactured by Matra BAe Dynamics, has been a decade in the making.
Military planners class Storm Shadow as a "high survivability and effectiveness" weapon - meaning it minimises the risk to aircraft and crew while maximising the radius of attack.
The better the pre-programme data, the more chances it has to navigate around enemy defences and still find its target.
To all intents and purposes the French-made SCALP EG cruise missile is exactly the same weapon. Both are derived from the earlier French Apache anti-runway missile.

The missile incorporates stealth characteristics and has an official range in excess of 500 kilometres (311 mi). Taurus is powered by a turbofan engine at mach 0.8~0.9 and can be carried by the Tornado, Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen and F/A-18 aircraft.
The double 499-kilogram (1,100 lb) warhead called Mephisto (Multi-Effect Penetrator, HIgh Sophisticated and Target Optimised) features a precharge and initial penetrating charge to clear soil or enter a bunker, then a variable delay fuse to control detonation of the main warhead. The missile weighs about 1,400 kg (3,086 lb) and has a maximum body diameter of 1 metre (3.3 ft). Intended targets are hardened bunkers, command, control and communications; airfield facilities; port facilities; AMS/ammunition storage; ships/submarines in ports and bridges.
The missile also includes counter measures as a self-defence mechanism.
Mission planners program the missile with the target, air defence locations and planned ground path, then the missile uses a low terrain-hugging flight path guided by INS, IBN, TRN and GPS to the proximity of the target. TAURUS KEPD 350 is the world's only precision stand-off guided missile system that is capable of navigating over long distances without GPS support [5]. Once there the missile commences a bunt (climb) manoeuver to an altitude intended to achieve the best probability of target acquisition and penetration. During the cruise flight a high resolution infra-red camera can support the navigation by using IBN and is also used for GPS-free target attack. The missile attempts to match a camera image with the planned 3D target model. If it can't, it defaults to the other, navigation systems, or, if there is a high risk of collateral damage, it will steer to a pre-designated crash point instead of risking an inaccurate attack with undesired consequences.
